MYP Design Cycle Year 1
Challenge 1:
Your group has been hired by Florida for a Better Tomorrow to create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to educate the population on becoming a life-long learner. The PSA must be 1-3 minutes in length, provide information in a creative way on becoming a lifelong learner.
Design Cycle A: Inquiring and Analysing
i. Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem
1. State the problem:
2. Explain why this problem must be solved:
3. Justify the need for the solution:
ii. State and prioritize the main points of research needed to develop a solution to the problem
1. What questions do I need to I have? (brainstorm 5-10 questions)
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
F.
G.
2. Put a checkmark by all questions that must be answered to solve this problem.
3. Research each question. Record your findings. Create a proper MLA Citation.
4. Summarize your findings and what you think you think your solution will be based on the research.
iii. Describe the main features of one existing PSA that inspires a solution to the problem
1. Name of existing PSA:
2. Main features of existing PSA:
3. Important facts about the existing PSA:
4. Create a storyboard of the existing PSA. Include camera shots, setting, rough pictures and summarized script.
5. Copyright Citation:
iv. Present the main findings of relevant research
1. Summarize the information found in ii and iii to present your proposed solution to the problem.
Design Cycle B: Developing ideas
i. Develop a list of PSA specifications/success criteria for the solution
1. List the PSA specifications/criteria your solution will
include (at least 6)
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.

PSA 2

PSA 3
Pros:
Cons:
iii. Present the chosen PSA idea; describing the key features
iv. Create a planning storyboard which outlines the main details for making the chosen solution
1. Which PSA will you create?
2. Explain which details made you choose the PSA?
Design Cycle C: Creating the solution
i. Outline a plan, which considers the use of resources and time, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution
1. List all resources
2. Create a timeline including dates and/or estimated time for creating your solution
ii. Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution
1. Did you work safely/effectively with all materials? Explain.
2. Did you worked effectively with my group members? Explain.
3. Did everyone in your group contribute equally? Explain.
iii. Following the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended list the changes made to the chosen PSA and plan when making the solution
1. On the storyboard, in colored ink, draw any changes you made to your PSA during the creation. *If you have several changes, number each change on your design
2. List the number of each change here and explain why you made each change.
iv. Present the solution as a whole, save the PSA to your flash drive.
Design Cycle D: Evaluating
i. Outline simple, relevant testing methods, which generate data, to measure the success of the solution
1. On separate paper;
Create a test/survey that can be used to “evaluate” your final PSA. The test should have a question for each PSA specifications/criteria, additional questions are encouraged. (Attach the surveys to the back of the process journal)
Administer the test to at least 5 people.
ii.Outline the success of the solution against the design specifications
1. What were the results of each test question? (Use a separate paper if needed)
2. Based on the results would you say that your final solution was successful? Explain.
3. Do you think you solved the problem? Explain:
iii. Outline how the solution could be improved
1. Based on your test, how could you improve your solution?
2. Based on your experience and knowledge base, how could you improve your solution?
iv. Outline the impact of the solution on the client/target audience
1. How successful do you think your solution will be for your client/target audience?
2. How would you choose to present your solution to the client/target audience?
